CVCC, in partnership with the Region 2000 Technology Council, the Region 2000 Career Pathways Consortium, and Timberlake Christian School, is sponsoring a regional FIRST LEGO League Robotics Competition to be held at Timberlake Christian School, Saturday, November 12, 2011. Two hundred and fifty students, 9 through 14 years old, comprising 36 teams, are expected to participate in this year’s challenge.
This regional event is open to any of the 507 Virginia teams competing this year. School sponsored teams in Region 2000 include Dunbar Middle, Perrymont Elementary, Elon Elementary, Forest Elementary, Appomattox Middle, Boonsboro Elementary, Holy Cross Regional, New Covenant Elementary, Smith Mountain Lake Christian, and several home school and community groups.
FIRST LEGO League is an international program for elementary and middle school students created in a partnership between FIRST and The LEGO Group in 1998. Each September, FIRST LEGO League announces the annual challenge to teams, which engages them in authentic scientific research and hands-on robotic design. Students work alongside adult mentors to design, build, and program robots to solve real world challenges. After nine intense weeks the competition season culminates at high-energy, sports-like tournaments.
CVCC sponsors the tournament, in part, through a grant provided by Tech Prep in Virginia. The Lynchburg tournament is one of the largest regional competitions in the Commonwealth. Winners will be given an opportunity to participate in a statewide competition.
The vision of the FIRST LEGO League, as expressed by its founder Dean Kamen, is “to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”
The opening ceremony will be held on November 12th at 9:00 a.m. Spectators are welcome at the Performance Rounds beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Timberlake Christian School gymnasium The awards ceremony will be held at 3:15 p.m.
